The University of Maryland softball team will play its first home doubleheader Wednesday at the Terrapin Softball Complex in College Park, Md. The Terrapins will take on Rutgers University at 2:00 p.m. Admission to the game and parking (in Lot 4B only) are free. HOMEWARD BOUNDThe Maryland softball team plays its home opener Wednesday, March 17 against Rutgers University. The doubleheader will mark the beginning of the Terps' longest home stand of the season: 14 games.
College Park, Md. is a welcomed site for the Terps. After spending the past four weekends on the road, Maryland is 10-11. The 2003 team boasted an 18-3 record last season at the Terrapin Softball Complex, with the only losses coming against ACC opponents Georgia Tech and North Carolina.
SCOUTING RUTGERSThe Scarlet Knights (6-7) are coming off a week of rest after going 3-4 at a tournament in Tampa, Fla. While in Tampa, the Scarlet Knights picked up wins against Jacksonville, Coastal Carolina and Mercer. Rutgers fell to Oregon, Northeastern, Temple and UNLV.
The Scarlet Knights are led by the bat of senior infielder Megan Antonucci. Antonucci is hitting .351 with seven runs scored. Jessica Crosby and Helen Smith lead the Scarlet Knights with six RBI each.
Rutgers gets strong pitching from sophomore Christina Gillman (1-0), who leads the team in ERA. The team's ace is senior Leah Black, who sports a 1.78 ERA and has struck out 31 batters in six games started.
