COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland freshman Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) scored his 16th goal of the season, and his sixth game-winning goal, at the 54:31 mark, and the Maryland defense held Jacksonville to two total shots on goal on the day, to lead the Terrapins to a 3-0 victory against the Jacksonville Dolphins in NCAA second round action at Ludwig Field on Sunday afternoon.
Maryland improves to 15-7 overall, and advances to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1969. The Terps have advanced to the second round the last five consecutive years, failing to advance the last four.
Senior Randy Merkel and freshmen Dan Califf, Nick Downing and Beckett Hollenbach completely shut down the Jacksonville attack of Nesa Stefanovic and Bole Acimovic, as Stefanovic, the Dolphins' leading scorer, was held to one shot on goal. Both teams would play to a scoreless first half before Maryland's offense was able to connect in the second half. Maryland would connect first at the 54 minute mark when senior Keith Beach deflected a Jacksonville ball, found Twellman on the right side and Twellman found an open net to give the Terps a 1-0 lead.
Junior Jason Cropley would find sophomore Kirk Miller on the next scoring drive, as Cropley pressured a Jacksonville player deep in the Dolphins' territory. Cropley would intercept the pass, send the ball to a driving Miller and Miller would connect from 15 yards.
Senior forward Pierre Venditti would wrap it up for the Terrapins at the 77:26 mark as he accepted a long pass from Merkel in the middle and shoot and score from 18 yards out into an empty net. Maryland sophomore goalkeeper Christian Lewis would go untested on the afternoon, posting no saves on only two shots on goal. The Dolphins' keeper, Petar Popovic, posted nine saves and allowed the three goals.
"I have told this group of players all year they are a special group. They are a determined group of players. This was a great performance, and our best performance of the year," said Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski. "Our forwards did a great job of pressuring all day long, and the three freshmen and one senior completely shut down their (Jacksonville's) top two attacking players." "I was at the right spot at the right time, said Maryland freshman Taylor Twellman. "It was similar to my goal I had against Duke earlier this year. Keith (Beach) and I both made eye contact, and he knew I wanted the ball. He put it down and found me and that was it." Maryland awaits the winner of the UCLA vs. Creighton matchup.
