COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland freshman forward Taylor Twellman scored his 14th goal of his career, and the game-winning goal, at the 14:09 mark in the first half to lead the Terrapins to a 1-0 victory against Michigan State on Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The game marked the 30th anniversary of the two teams' co-national championship in 1968. Maryland improves to 12-6 overall while the Spartans fall to 7-11.
Twellman was able to capitalize after a Michigan State player was whistled for a handball while in the box. Twellman knocked in the penalty kick past Spartan goalkeeper T.J. Lieckfelt for the only goal of the game. Maryland next awaits the pairings of the 1998 ACC Tournament next week in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Terps enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play North Carolina on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 8:00 p.m.
