Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Redshirt-sophomore Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) hit his second consecutive game-winning penalty kick and notched his sixth goal of the year to lift No. 6 Maryland over William & Mary, 4-1. Maryland raises its record to 6-1, its best start since 1999, while William & Mary falls to 2-4.

Scoring began in the 34th minute when Erwin Diaz's (Washington, D.C.) diligence in the corner resulted in a sharp-angle opening that he was able to fit the hard shot through into the left side of the net. The goal was Diaz's second of the year and put the Terps up 1-0. William & Mary got one on the board when Ralph Bean found Graham Albert early in the second half for his first goal of the year. Graham snuck the equalizer past Maryland keeper Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.), but it would be William & Mary's only goal of the day. Palmer ended the day with three saves in the win.

A William & Mary foul in the box less than three minutes later resulted in a Maryland penalty kick. Terps' striker Thompson stepped up and buried his second penalty kick in two games, giving the Terps the go-ahead goal and a 2-1 lead with just over 40 minutes to play.

Diaz struck again in the 50th minute when Kenney Bertz (Liberty Township, Ohio) found Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) on the throw-in. Buete's cross pulled Tribe goalie Trevor Upton away from his post, and found its way to Diaz who made the deposit, his second of the game and third of the year. The goal stretched the Terps' lead to 3-1. William & Mary's Upton finished with one save en route to the loss.

Maryland topped the victory off with one final goal in the 81st minute. Thompson found sophomore striker Domenic Mediate (Southlake, Texas) in the center of the box, who hit for his third goal of the year and made the final a 4-1 victory for the Terps. The No. 6 Terps host No. 20 Duke on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. in what will be both team's second ACC match-up of the season. William & Mary hosts Virginia on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
