COLUMBUS, Ohio - Maryland, who advanced to the 2004 Final Four, scored a pair of second-half goals to break a 1-1 tie and defeated Ohio University, 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio.
The Terps start the season at 3-0 for the sixth year in a row, after defeating Northwestern in their season opener on Aug. 27 and Ohio State on Monday afternoon.
Under overcast skies, Maryland jumped out to an early lead at the 31:01 mark when three-time All-American Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) connected off an Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md.) pass on one of the Terps' nine penalty corners of the afternoon.
The game remained 1-0 at intermission and stayed that way until the Bobcats' (1-2) Lindsay Rothenberger scored her first goal of the season on a two-on-one breakaway at the 47:32 mark, tying the score, 1-1.
Just over five minutes later, the Terrapins took the lead for good. On a close-range shot off a pass from senior Meredith Long (Ocean City, N.J.), Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) connected on the left side of the cage to return the lead to Maryland.
Less than six minutes later, the Maryland lead grew to two after senior Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) found the back of the net in the 59th minute.
Maryland limited Ohio to just two shots, both in the second half, while attempting 11. The Terrapins also won the battle of penalty corners, 9-0.
The Terps return to action on Friday, Sept. 2 against Michigan to open the home portion of the schedule. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start. The Wolverines will be the third Big Ten team Maryland will have played in its first four games.
