College Park, Md. -
After a 3-2 victory against St. Johns in the first game, the Maryland softball team fell, 4-3, to Radford in the second game to split the day's games.
Junior Mandy Gardner hit a walk off home run to give the Terps (5-12) the win in Maryland's first game of the day over the Red Storm (4-13-1).
In the bottom of the second, senior Nikki Maier led off the game's scoring when she hit her fifth home run of the season.
After five scoreless innings from freshman Maddie Martin, St. Johns got on the board in the bottom of the sixth thanks to Chelsea Montez's two-run homer to tie the game at 2.
St. Johns was threatening again in the top of the seventh, but freshman Brenna Nation came in and got the Terps out of a bases loaded jam. This sent the Terps into the bottom of the seventh tied at 2 and set up Gardner to hit the game-winning homerun.
In the day's second game, the Terps couldn't complete a comeback against the Highlanders (3-9). With a 3-0 deficit in the top of the fourth, Maryland fought back to tie the game at three in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough to seal a victory.
Next, Shannon Bustillos singled down the right field line to bring Maier and Beards home to tie the game at 3.
In the top of the seventh inning, Radford hit a double to send Megan Honaker home and seal the victory, 4-3.
The Terps' next two games in the Miken Invitational Tournament are tomorrow in College Park, Md. against Iowa at 11 a.m. and Ohio State immediately following. Admission is free for all games and parking is open all weekend in lot 4B.
