College Park, Md. - Joe Mele scored the game-winning goal with nine seconds left in the second overtime to give Bucknell a stunning 7-6 upset of the No. 1 ranked Maryland men's lacrosse team at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex Tuesday night.

Maryland jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the first quarter when All-American Joe Walters laced a shot past Bison goalie Matt Baran, but that would be the last lead of the game for the Terps as Bucknell scored twice in the final five minutes of the quarter to take a 2-1 lead.

That pattern would repeat itself two more times as Maryland scored the opening goal in both the second and third quarters only to see Bucknell answer back with two of its own to take a 6-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth it was Maryland's seniors that stepped up and took control of the game on the offensive end, leading the comeback to erase Bucknell's three-goal advantage, while the defense shutdown a deliberate Bison offense. Brendan Healy started the rally for the Terps with a man-up goal, his second score of the game, at the 11:39 mark. It was then Maryland's defense's time to rise to the occasion.

Baran stopped back-to-back shots from Walters and Healy, giving Bucknell a clear attempt at the 9:12 mark. The Bison executed the clear successfully, but All-America defenseman Steve Whittenberg caused one of his career-best six turnovers to give Maryland possession of the ball. Less than a minute later Bill McGlone trimmed the Bison lead to one off an assist from Xander Ritz.

Bucknell was clinging to a one-goal lead and twice took over possession following a Walters' shot, but each time sophomore long pole Charlie Wiggins forced turnovers to give the Terps the ball back, which led to Walters feeding Ritz for the game-tying goal with 4:40 remaining.

Maryland dominated possession throughout the fourth quarter and into the first overtime period, outshooting the Bison 19-1 over that stretch, but could not put Bucknell away. That came back to haunt the Terps in the second overtime when Mark Lane found Mele on the left wing and Mele slipped the ball past Terrapin goalie Harry Alford for the game-winner.

Senior face-off specialist David Tamberrino was sensational for the Terps at the X, winning 11 of 18 face-offs. Alford finished the game with 11 saves, while Whittenberg added five groundballs to go along with his six caused turnovers.

The Terps will try to rebound when they play at UMBC on Saturday, March 18, at UMBC Stadium. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
