COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Seniors Kristy Black, Brittany Dipper, and Karri Ellen Johnson and junior Katie Schwarzmann were named captains for the 2012 Maryland women's lacrosse team Tuesday.

Black returns for her senior season after a breakout 2011 campaign. The Glenwood, Md., product started all 23 matches last season and was fifth on the team in goals with 31.

Dipper was tabbed IWLCA, Synapse Sports, and National Goalie of the Year in 2011. The Clarksboro, N.J., native was also an IWLCA First Team All-American and landed on the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship All-Tournament team for the third consecutive season.

Johnson missed the majority of last year's ACC championship campaign but is poised for a mighty return in 2012. The senior from Annapolis, Md., was named Lacrosse Magazine's National Preseason Player of the Year in 2011 and is a two-time IWLCA First Team All-American.

Schwarzmann garnered a slew of awards in 2011 including IWLCA, Synapse Sport and National Midfielder of the Year. The Sykesville, Md., product was also a finalist for the Honda Award and Tewaaraton Trophy.

"We are excited to have four very deserving veteran players serve as captains this season," head coach Cathy Reese said. "With our seniors Kristy, Brittany and Karri Ellen, we have three players who have put a great deal of hard work and dedication into this program for three years.

"Katie is an accomplished player who has also evolved into a leader both on and off the field for our team. We look forward to the leadership this group will provide in 2012."

Maryland returns six starters from last year's squad.
