COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland enjoyed a sweet homecoming, hitting on all cylinders to shut out Northwestern under the lights, 4-0, in the opening game of the 2001 Terrapin Invitational at the Artificial Turf Facility in College Park. Seniors Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) and Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) lead the Terrapin attack with two goals apiece, while the goalie tandem of senior Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) and freshman Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) shut out the Wildcat offense. With the win, the No. 3-ranked Terrapins improve to a 4-1 on the season.
Rizzo opened up the scoring, rocketing a Rachel Hiskins (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) rebound into the cage at 32:48 in the first half to help the Terps to an early 1-0 lead. Walter capitalized off her own rebound at the 28:54 mark in the first half to help the Terps jump out to a 2-0 advantage. With 15:05 to go in the first half, it was Rizzo lighting up the scoreboard a second time. The senior midfielder collected a penalty corner rebound and slapped it off the Wildcat's sliding goalie and into the upper-righthand corner of the goal, giving Maryland a three-goal cushion at halftime. Walter added her second goal late in the second half to cap the Maryland scoring.
Hohnstine and Hearsey split time in goal with the senior starter making two saves in the first half, while Hearsey stopped one shot in her third career appearance. Wildcat keeper Kendra Mesa was solid in the cage with 13 saves.
Maryland kept the ball on the offensive end for much of the game recording 27 shots to Northwestern's 5.
The Terrapins will next face Kent State on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. for the final game of the weekend-long Terrapin Invitational. Following Sunday's game, the team will hit the road for a pair of games in the coming week against Massachusetts on Sept. 15 and Louisville on Sept. 16.
