NEWARK, Del. - Senior Andrew "Buggs" Combs (Baltimore, Md.) scored a career-high six goals including four in the fourth quarter in a span 3:34 to lift the No. 3 Maryland men's lacrosse team to a 10-4 win at Delaware on Saturday night. Combs continues to leads the nation in goals with 23. Maryland moves to 5-0, its best start since an 8-0 start in 1998. Delaware falls to 1-5.
The teams played a tight ball-control game with Maryland holding a 5-3 lead heading to the fourth quarter before Combs opened the floodgates. He scored his third goal of the game off a pass from sophomore defenseman Michael Howley (Wantagh, N.Y.) to make it 6-3 with 9:19 left in regulation. Combs then took a pass from freshman Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) with 8:24 left to make it 7-3. Sophomore Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) netted the Terps' eighth goal with 6:56 remaining, before Combs scored two more goals just 31 seconds apart at the 6:16 and 5:45 marks. Both goals were assisted by the LaMonica brothers (Dan on the first and Mike on the second).
Maryland and Delaware played a very conservative first quarter that was scoreless until Combs scored with six seconds left in the first quarter off a pass from Mollot. Delaware tied the game early in the second quarter, but Maryland scored three of the next four goals as Dan LaMonica, Combs and Alex Poole (Hunt Valley, Md.) scored to make it 4-2 at halftime. Delaware's Jason Lavey and Dan LaMonica traded third quarter goals to set the stage for Combs' fourth-quarter barrage.
Maryland also received an outstanding effort in goal from senior Pat McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.), who made 12 saves. Junior face-off man Brian Carroll (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) was also sensational winning a career-high 12 of 13 draws.
Maryland returns to action on Saturday, March 24 as the Terps host ACC rival North Carolina at Byrd Stadium.
