COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Redshirt-freshman Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) tied the game as the second half expired and senior Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) banged in an overtime game-winner to cap her first career hat trick as the No. 1 Maryland field hockey squad erased a 4-0 deficit to come back against No. 13 Duke.
The Terrapins (9-2, 2-1 ACC) gave up four unanswered first-half goals, with two coming off the stick of Blue Devil senior Liz Bateman, in the first twenty minutes of the match. After Rizzo got the Terps on the scoreboard, fourth-year forward Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) netted a goal with six seconds remaining in the first half to cut the Duke lead to two.
Maryland roared out of the halftime huddle, tying the game by the 20 minute mark on goals by two-time All-American Rachel Hiskins (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) and Rizzo. The Terps outshot the Blue Devils (6-4, 0-2 ACC) 19-1 in the second period but couldn't hold off Bateman, who gave Duke a 5-4 lead with 13:09 to play.
The Terrapins tried valiantly to make another run, and after earning a penalty corner with time winding down, Silvetti collected her own rebound and hammered it in to sent the contest to overtime.
Rizzo completed her hat trick and the Terps' comeback 40 seconds into the extra session on a running backhan. The three goals and six points were both career-highs for the feisty two-time All-Region selection.
Hiskins finished the contest with a goal and an assist, while fellow two-time All-American Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) was credited with the pass to set up Rizzo's second goal.
Maryland completes its big weekend of travel at home on Sunday, hosting Rutgers at 2 p.m.
