CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- - Playing in a continuous driving rainstorm, the Maryland women's soccer team put up a valiant fight against the No. 10 Virginia Cavaliers before falling 5-0 at Klockner Stadium on Wednesday night.
With the field covered in water Maryland outshot Virginia 11-10, but was unable to convert in the nasty conditions.
Virginia jumped out to a 3-0 lead on three goals by Angela Hucles in the first 26:51 of the match. Alyssa Benitez made it 4-0 off a pass from Darci Borski at the 33:23 mark.
The Cavaliers were held to just one shot in the second while Maryland continued to mount an attack in the wet conditions, recording six shots in the second half. Virginia recorded the only tally as Jill Maxwell scored off a corner kick from Meredith Rhodes at 56:11.
Maryland's Ali Wolff made three saves in the game and Riki-Ann Serrins came on in relief to play the final 23 minutes but did not record a save.
The Terps, who are now 3-6-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the ACC return to action on Saturday as they travel to Williamsburg to take on No. 23 William & Mary at 4 p.m. at Barksdale Field.
Virginia improves to 7-2 overall, 3-0 in the ACC.
