Piscataway, N.J.---Unranked Rutgers (3-1) scored three goals within a span of 4:52 in the second half, propelling them to a 4-3 upset of sixth-ranked Maryland (3-1) at Rutgers Stadium Complex today.
The Terps jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by freshman forward Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) and senior back Jen Pratt (Greene, N.Y.). Rutgers, however, exploded for four consecutive goals, all in the second half to take a 4-2 lead with 5:20 to play. Sophomore midfielder Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year to pull the Terps to within a goal, but the host Knights held on for the win.
Sophomore goalie Angela Platt (Coleraine, Northern Ireland) recorded four saves while sophomore backs Sarah Rappolt (West Chester, Pa.) and Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) had two and one defensive saves respectively.
The Terps next game is on Wednesday at home against Towson at 7:30 p.m.
