COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) and junior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) scored two goals each and junior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y) recorded two assists to lead No. 4 Maryland to a 7-2 victory over Ball State in the championship game of the fourth annual Terrapin Invitational field hockey tournament at the Artificial Turf Facility here Sunday. The victory marked the fourth consecutive year that the Terps had claimed the tournament championship. American University defeated Georgetown, 4-0, in the afternoon's first game.
Palchinsky scored two second-half goals as the Terps outscored the Cardinals, 5-0, in the second half to gain the victory. Palchinsky scored Maryland's third goal with 2:30 elapsed in the second half. It proved to be the game-wining goal. She also scored Maryland's fifth goal that increased its lead to 5-2 with 19:31 remaining in the game.
Hiskins scored Maryland's second and fourth goals and assisted on the Terps' third and seventh goals. She recorded two goals and five assists during the two-day tournament and has now scored eight goals and added 15 assists this season.
Sophomores Autumn Welsh (Allentown, Pa.), Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.) and Caroline Walter (Reiligen, Germany) all added second-half goal to lead the Terps.
Freshman Magdalena Aguilar (Buenos Aires, Argentina) scored three goals and senior Jhoanna Savino (Caracas, Venezuela) recorded two assists as American defeated Georgetown, 4-0, to claim the unofficial D.C. collegiate field hockey championship. Goalie Lauren McDonnell played 68 of 70 minutes and made four saves to gain the shutout victory.
