Women's Soccer Opens New Era With 2-0 Win Over GW

Aug. 29, 1999

LOUDON, Va. - A new era in Maryland women's soccer got off on the right foot as the Terrapins defeated rival George Washington, 2-0, at South Riding Field on Sunday. The win was especially sweet for new Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski, who defeated the school she coached at for seven years from 1991-1997.

"It feels really good to get the monkey off our back right away," said Higgins-Cirovski. "Going against GW and getting the rivalry out of the way in the first game with a win was very special."

The Terps (1-0) jumped on top as senior midfielder Emily Janss (Brandon, Fla.) scored from inside the box on a scramble off a pass from freshman forward Valerie Lawrence (Silver Spring, Md.), just 28:31 into the match. Freshman defender Sally Harrison (Virginia Beach, Va.) was also credited with an assist.

After outshooting the Colonials, 6-1 in the first half, Maryland came out strong in the second half and converted its second tally of the game as freshman forward Kim King (Media, Pa.) blasted home her first collegiate goal from just outside the top of the box at the 74:10 mark. Senior midfielder Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) and sophomore Courtney Beirne (Westminster, Md.) were credited with assists on the goal.

The Terps outshot the Colonials 13-2 in the game as junior goalie Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.) made just one save to record her seventh career shutout.

Maryland opens its home season on Wednesday, Sept. 1 as the Terps host UMBC at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
