COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Outfielder Niki Lau has mastered success both in the classroom and on the field in her time as a Maryland student-athlete. She was recently named a Dean's Scholar in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland School of Public Health and is the recipient of The Lester Fraley Award, an honor given to the top undergraduate, graduating student in the School of Public Health.
The Lester Fraley Award is based on academic excellence and achievement, community and campus involvement, leadership, and personal character. The recipient is chosen by the School of Public Health's faculty. It is given to a student the faculty believes to have the potential to make a difference.
The Dean's Senior Scholar awards are given out to the outstanding seniors within the various majors of the School of Public Health and focus on a student's GPA.
An All-ACC Academic Team member as well, Lau has been a strong contributor for the Terrapins on the field throughout her three-year career. Through the 2008, 2009 and 2010 season so far, Lau carries a career batting average of .257 with 92 hits and 54 runs scored.
Lau missed the beginning month of the 2010 season due to injury, but since then is batting .277 with eight RBI. Her defensive plays in right field have been vital to the success of the Terps.
She spent last summer volunteering as a research assistant at the Center for the Intrepid at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, a center for wounded war veterans. Niki is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society and is in contention for the University Medal award - one of the most prestigious awards for graduating students.
Niki has served the Terps as a member of the Team Council, an elected captain, and a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Niki and the Terps will head south once again this weekend to take on North Carolina State in a three-game weekend series. The Terrapins and the Wolfpack will take the field Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader and Sunday for a single game at 1 p.m. as well.
