BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Maryland softball team fell to the No. 3-seed Florida State 3-0 Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship. The 6th-seeded Terps (33-22, 8-11) rallied in late innings, but fell to the No. 25 Seminoles.
Freshman catcher Samantha Mallory, who has led the ACC in stolen baserunners caught all season, caught three Seminole baserunners in the game to bring her season total to 19.
Junior Kerry Hickey started in the circle for the Terps. She pitched 3.0 innings, giving up just two hits and one unearned run. She recorded two strikeouts and allowed just two walks. Sophomore Kendra Knight came on to begin the fourth inning. She allowed two hits as well, and gave up two earned runs and six walks.
The Seminoles scored in the bottom of the third inning. Carly Wynn walked to lead off and Tiffani Brown singled to advance her to second. Both moved on a wild pitch by Hickey. Wynn scored on a throwing error by the Terrapins to take the 1-0 lead.
Wynn walked to lead off the fifth inning as well and then advanced to second on a wild pitch by Knight. Brown singled again to advance Wynn to third, then she stole second. Shayla Jackson reached on a fielder's choice, in which Wynn was thrown out at the plate by Knight. Ashley Stager followed with a double to score Jackson and Brown, but was thrown out at third by Branson.
The Terrapins rallied in the late innings. In the sixth, Branson hit a triple down the right field line with two outs. In the seventh inning, Lau singled up the middle with one out. McLaughlin followed with a base hit and Galindo advanced them both with a pop to short, but the inning ended one batter later.
The NCAA Selection Show for the 2010 NCAA Division I Softball Tournament is scheduled for Sunday at 10 p.m. on ESPNU.
