COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland softball team will take on St. Joseph's University in a doubleheader this Thursday at 3 p.m. The Terrapins (18-14) are back on the winning track after taking two games from local rival George Mason, 6-2 and 4-0. Parking and admission to the event are free.
In Maryland's first game against George Mason, senior catcher Casey Leiter's (Lake Stevens, Wash.) first career grand slam lifted Maryland to victory. Leiter, who went 5-for-5 on the day, raised her batting average to a team-leading .373.
The Hawks (9-15) are coming off a doubleheader split with Rider. In the Hawks' 7-0 loss, they committed four errors, but followed the game with an 8-0 victory that ended Rider's seven-game winning streak. The Hawks' leading hitter is junior Megan Richardson, who's batting second in the lineup with a .301 average. St. Joseph's pitching staff is anchored by senior Dana Travis. Travis (6-5) leads the team with 47 strikeouts and also sports a team-best 3.32 ERA. Also included in the Hawks' rotation are junior Cara Deldeo (1-4) and freshman Lauren Hughes (2-6).
St. Joseph's and Maryland met for the first time in 2002. Maryland swept the doubleheader from St. Joseph's, but worked overtime for their second win. The 2-1 victory came in the 13th inning with then-sophomore Nneka Cardoza (Brockton, Mass.) scoring the winning run.
