STANFORD, Calif. - A pair of goals each from senior Paula Infante and junior Janneke van Leeuwen led the NCAA Champion Terrapins to a 6-0 rout of Pacific on Saturday afternoon in the season opener. The Terps scored four goals in the second half to break the game wide open.
Reigning national player of the year Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile) scored what was eventually the game winner off of one of Maryland's nine penalty corners in the 27th minute. Van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) recorded her first of the afternoon in the 39th minute to give the Terps a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, Maryland scored three goals in a six-minute span to pull away. Infante knocked in a loose ball in the 48th minute, followed by senior Emily Trycinski's (Nazareth, Pa.) tally in the 52nd minute off a blocked shot. Van Leeuwen capped her afternoon with an unassisted, backhanded shot to give the Terps a 5-0 advantage.
Junior All-American Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) swatted away all six of the Tigers' shots on goal to claim the shutout.
The top-ranked Terps are back in action on Sunday, August 27 when they take on host Stanford at 6 p.m. ET.
