COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Terps blank Loyola in Maryland/adidas Classic Ludwig scores lone goal
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With Hurricane Isabel looming on the horizon, Maryland blanked Loyola 1-0 in the rescheduled first game of the Maryland/adidas Classic at a breezy Ludwig Field Wednesday night.
Katie Ludwig's (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) second-minute goal was the sole tally, though both teams had several good scoring opportunities in the second half. Ludwig received the ball near the 18-yard box on passes from Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.) and Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) and her blast deflected off a Loyola defender past keeper Erica Niemann into the lower right corner of the net.
"It was a real boost to get a goal so early in the game," said Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirvoski. "On the defensive side, we were very connected tonight and that helped us when Loyola built up the pressure. This was a good win for us."
The Greyhounds had two near-goals in the second half on a 64th minute header by Ashley Kramer that hit the crossbar and an 86th minute bender from Carolyn Kennington, the Hounds leading scorer, which also deflected off the crossbar.
Maryland had several chances to extend their lead, but could not capitalize on 13 second-half shots.
With the win, Maryland moves to 8-0 all-time versus Loyola and has outscored the Hounds 25-3. Kristen Barnhill (Charlottesville, Va.) registered four saves in recording her fifth career shutout.
Projected inclement weather from Hurricane Isabel forced the rescheduling of the first two games of the tournament. The second game between William & Mary against the University of Tennessee will take place Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at Ludwig Field. Action is scheduled to continue Saturday from SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md. when Loyola takes on William & Mary at 5 p.m. and concludes with the Terps taking on the No. 23 Lady Vols at 7:30 p.m.
If weather forces further schedule changes to the Maryland/adidas Classic, the latest information will be posted to www.umterps.com.
