COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite one of the greatest overall team performances by the Maryland field hockey squad this season, the top-ranked Terrapins fell in overtime to No. 3 Old Dominion, 1-0. Maryland's valiant performance saw a 10-9 shot advantage for the game, and the Terps' effort was only spoiled by a penalty corner shot by the Monarchs' Angie Loy at 11:31 in the first extra period.
"Maryland played a really competitive, high energy, outrageous game of field hockey, and I think the score is an ironic thing sometimes," said Terp head coach Missy Meharg. "I'm not so sure that the outcome matches up to the amount of effort and fortitude that was in that match."
The Terps (11-3, 2-1 ACC) and Monarchs (11-3, 1-0 CAA) battled back and fourth throughout the match, ending regulation time in a 0-0 stalemate. Maryland applied steady pressure on the offensive end in the second half, outshooting their non-conference nemesis 6-1, but could not find the back of the goal cage.
The veteran goalkeepers for the Monarchs and Terrapins were both solid. Old Dominion junior Marybeth Freeman made three saves while Maryland's Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) stopped four.
The deadlock was broken during seven-aside play with Loy's goal. After the Terps were called for a foul inside the circle, junior Tiffany Snow flipped the ball to Loy on the right side of the cage, who buried the shot in the left side of the net.
Meharg and the Terrapins were pleased with their outstanding effort despite the outcome, and remained optimistic following the match.
"I'm really proud of the team," said the head coach. "We've been working very hard on becoming a team in terms of being on the same emotional page. It was an enormous win for us in that category, irrelevant of [what appeared on] the scoreboard."
Maryland's next match takes the Terps to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a meeting with ACC-rival North Carolina. The Terps and Tar Heels face off on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
