BALTIMORE, Md. - The Maryland softball team was edged by the Towson Tigers Wednesday afternoon 1-0 in a defensive battle. The Terps (25-17, 3-8) are 22-9 on the year against nonconference opponents.
Junior Kerry Hickey started in the circle for the Terrapins. She threw for all seven innings, recording six strikeouts and allowing just three hits. She gave up just one run and did now allow a walk.
The game's lone run was scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. Towson's Rachel Miller led off the inning with a single up the middle. She advanced to second on a wild pitch by Hickey and advanced to third on a bunt by Sammi DiPompo. Stef Streets sent a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to bring in Miller for the score.
Hickey, as well as senior Alex Schultz and junior Marybeth Herrick, all had hits for the Terrapins. Hickey singled in the fourth inning and Schultz in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Herrick pinch hit and delivered a single up the middle.
Hickey is the current ACC Pitcher of the Week for her performance last week. She pitched 19.0 innings and racked up 25 strikeouts. She gave up just six hits and threw her ninth career no-hitter against Virginia Tech last weekend.
The Terrapins will head south this weekend to take on No. 23 North Carolina for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. as well.
