COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Matt Kassel's first goal of his Maryland career was a vital one as the No. 4 Terps defeated Binghamton, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday night at Ludwig Field.

Maryland took its first shot at 42:43 when Drew Yates fired just wide of the goal. The Terps would have another strong scoring opportunity approximately ten minutes later when Casey Townsend connected on a Rich Costanzo cross for a crisp header that sailed wide of the post. In total, Maryland tallied four shots on goal in the first twenty minutes of the match.

For the second game in a row, the Terps had to battle the elements. Following a rainy contest against Wake Forest last Friday, the Maryland and Binghamton contest was delayed nearly an hour and a half due to strong lightning at Ludwig Field at 20:32 in the first half.

When play resumed, Maryland continued to spatter shots at the Binghamton defense thru the first half and into the beginning of the second half. Bearcat keeper Jason Stenta made a few superior saves to hold the Terps offense at-bay. After ten corner kicks by Kassel came dangerously close to putting the Terps on the board, the freshman from Bridewater, N.J., took matters into his own hands and launched a rocket from long-range in the center of the field into the back of the net thru traffic at 78:01 to give Maryland the 1-0 win. It is Kassel's first goal as a Terp.

Maryland dominated Binghamton offensively for the entirety of the contest, out-shooting the Bearcats 20-7. The Terps took ten more corners than Binghamton.

"Binghamton is a good, organized team," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "It was a hard fought win for us tonight.

"We had a lot of chances to score, but weren't as dangerous on those scoring opportunities as we could have been. It was a good win and now we move on to Clemson."

The Terps hit the road for the first time since Aug. 31, when they travel to ACC-foe Clemson on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
