COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's tennis team began competition in the 2007 Maryland Invitational Tournament this morning at the Tennis Center at College Park. Two of the Terps' three doubles teams in the tournament won the opening two rounds of their flights.
In first round of Flight C, sophomore co-captain Lisa Miller defeated Brooke Jones of Army, 7-6, 6-4, while freshman Adela Matejkova won her match over George Washington's Madhuri Jha, 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Oksana Krutiyenko beat Vicki Pulido (Ohio) of Miami in a close match, 6-3, 7-6 (2) in the opening round of Flight B.
Freshman Karin Lundmark fell to Ulia Talalenko of Nova Southeastern, 6-2, 6-1, while sophomore Maggie MacKeever dropped her match to Missouri's Kaitlyn Ritchie, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round of Flight B. Freshman Julia Hushke lost to Susan Pollack of Delaware, 6-0, 7-6 (7), in the opening round of Flight A.
Lundmark and Huschke won their dual matches in the first two rounds of Flight A. The duo defeated Miami's Cara Wald and Anastasia Dracheva, 8-4, in the first round, and Alexa Korotkevich and Ulia Talalenko of Nova Southeastern, 8-5, in round two.
In Flight B, Miller and Matejkova won also won their first two dual matches of the tournament. They beat Miranda Falzone and Andee Johnson of Nova Southeastern, 8-2, in round one and Army's Niki Flach and Brooke Jones, 8-6, in the second round.
MacKeever and Krutiyenko lost their first two dual matches of the tournament in Flight A. The pair dropped their match in round one to Pollack and Courtney Fenimore of Delaware, 8-1, and their consolation round match to Nova Southeastern's Edita Kulichova and Tsippy Waterman, 9-8 (5).
Tomorrow will include one round of doubles play and two rounds of singles. Competition continues tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at the Tennis Center at College Park.
