COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Maryland freshman Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) scored his first career hat trick to lift the Terrapins' men's soccer team to a 5-1 win over Monmouth Wednesday night. Maryland is now 5-5, while Monmouth falls to 3-5-2 overall. All of Thompson's goals came in the second half of the Terps' home win.

Dominant from the start of the game, Maryland finally converted its first goal in the 35th minute when senior Rob Birch (West Islip, N.Y.) capitalized on a Monmouth turnover and scored the 15-yarder. The goal was the third of the year for Birch.

The score remained a 1-0 Terrapin advantage until Thompson started his second-half scoring run. Freshman classmate Seth Stammler (Gahanna, Ohio) set Thompson up for his first goal at 58:03 and just over eight minutes later, Monmouth found itself behind 4-0 after Thompson converted a penalty kick at 63:16 and added his third and final goal of the night at 66:11. Thompson's high school teammate Clarence Goodson (Springfield, Va.) added the assist to help round out Thompson's first collegiate hat trick.

Midfielder Bryan Vitagliano (Scottsdale, Ariz.) put an exclamation on Maryland's victory when he scored on a high lob at 82:22. Jason Sardis (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Tyler Pharr (Dallas, Texas) added assists on the goal. The assist moved Sardis up one more spot on Maryland's all-time assists chart to tie Randy Merkel (1996-98) with 19 at the No. 4 spot.

Monmouth's Marc Lewis scored with less than three minutes remaining and ruined the Terrapin shutout when he scored the Hawks lone goal of the game at 87:56. Hawks' goalkeeper Tim Fauth ended the day with four saves, with Maryland keeper Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) finishing with two.

The Terps host No. 10 North Carolina on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The first 500 fans will receive free Maryland soccer T-shirts at Saturday night's contest against the Tar Heels. Monmouth next meets Mount St. Mary's on Friday. That contest is a road game for the Hawks.
