VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- - Maryland forward Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) headed the game-winner past William & Mary keeper Adin Brown just over six minutes into overtime to lift the Terps over the Tribe 1-0 Saturday night at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. No. 9 Maryland is now 10-3, while William & Mary falls for the second time this week and has a 6-4-3 overall record.
Both teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. Maryland had just two shots, both on goal. The Tribe challenged Terp starting goalkeeper Kevin Schmidt (Westfield, N.J.) three times in the first half. William & Mary's best sequence came off a corner kick in the 39th minute when Andrew Pillari launched a hard shot from 10 yards out that Schmidt blocked. Brian Hinkey fired a shot immediately off the rebound, which Dan Califf (Orange, Calif.) deflected to keep the game scoreless.
An intense second-half lead to three cards, two for the Terps and one for the Tribe, but yielded no goals. Hermann Trophy candidate Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.) had the Terps' best chance of the half when he sent a free kick sailing towards the upper left side of the net. Brown was there to keep the Tribe in it with a spectacular diving save. When time expired, the Terps' headed into their first overtime contest of the season.
Less then two minutes into overtime Tribe forward Carlos Garcia fired a shot, which Schmidt blocked. John Feldmann drilled the rebound towards the net, but Schmidt was there again with the clutch save. The Terps would have the answer a little over a minute later when Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) found Twellman for the dynamic header to win the game. Twellman's goal was his eighth of the season, and his fifth game-winner. The assist was Buete's seventh of the year. Jason Cropley (La Canada, Calif.) was also credited with an assist on the play.
The Terrapin men's soccer team is in action again this Wednesday at American. Game time for the South-Atlantic Region match-up is 3 p.m. Maryland then returns home for the first time since Oct. 2 on Saturday against Wake Forest. That ACC contest starts at 7:30 at Ludwig Field.
