COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland ran its record to 5-0 and beat Virginia 41-21 to remain undefeated before a crowd of 44,197 on Saturday at Byrd Stadium. Next, Maryland faces Georgia Tech in a Thursday night battle on ESPN.

Below are quotes following Saturday's win.

Maryland Coach Ralph Friedgen
On the team's overall performance:
"I thought this was a really good win for our program. I thought our kids responded very well, playing in this type of game. I think our offense was really tight early. Our defense kept us in the game early. I thought our coaches did a good job adjusting to things, both offensively and defensively. I think we won a very big football game in Maryland history. I know our seniors are happy to have the Virginia streak end at nine games."

On the special teams:
"I thought our special teams had a really significant part in this win."

On the decision to give Virginia the ball in the second half:
"I really thought this game would come down to a field goal. I have too much respect for Al Groh and their team. If I wanted to kick a field goal, I wanted my kicker to have the wind at his back, so I elected to give them the wind and the ball in the second half."

On Bruce Perry:
"He has great feet, great acceleration and great vision. He's very unselfish. I never thought he got 140 yards today. The other thing we did good today was getting him the ball out of the backfield, which I'm really happy with because he's a really good receiver. I'm trying to get some of these other running backs in the game, but it's hard to take [Perry] out."

On Shaun Hill and the passing game:
"I thought he was real tight to start the game. As the game went on, he started to see some things and started to adjust. We got the play action going with the run today and we got the kind of balance that I like."

On the support from fans and students:
"That's a part of the enthusiasm that's going on here. I feel so good about it. I feel like I'm home and it's just a really good feeling."

Guilian Gary
On the offense: "We are playing with more confidence on offense. Bruce [Perry] is playing extremely well. Shaun [Hill] is making the right reads for us and the right plays. Coach Taaffe is making the right calls. So everything is working for us right now."

Bruce Perry
On taking the late hit: "He hit me a little late. He hit me in the shoulder and it felt numb. But that comes with the territory. You have to be ready to take hits like that."

On what helped the running game: "The offensive line got low and created some opportunities for me. We were running off of what Virginia gave us. We got what we got."

Tony Okanlawon
On his pass coverage: "It's always personal with every receiver I go against. You have to go into every game with that attitude because if they get a chance to make a big play, they are going to make a big play. They won't care who is checking them. Every game we play, it's always personal no matter who it is against."

On his interception: "It was sweet. It was man coverage and I knew from everything that was happening in the game that they always wanted to get McMullen the ball. No matter who was on him, they were going to give him the ball. They threw him a couple balls that went my way and I batted them down. On that play, I knew we had to make something happen. I didn't know who was going to do it, but I knew as a defense we had to make something happen. Lucky for me, they threw the ball my way and I made a play."

Aaron Thompson
On E.J. Henderson's blocked field goal: "E.J. always gets in there and blocks field goal kicks in practice. Everybody knows he is capable of it. It was great for him to get it in a game at a time that we needed it."

Shaun Hill
On beating Virginia: "It's a rivalry. Everybody knows that. [Virginia] has dominated it for about the last decade. Winning was something we had to do to turn the corner and start something new here at Maryland. We are on the right track. We can't let up now, though."

Virginia Coach Al Groh
On the Maryland performance:
"This is certainly the best team we've played this year and the most physical team we've played all year. They played very well, I was impressed. We played a good Maryland team and we made a few mistakes. They did some very good things. They got a good drive going and we got a punt blocked which is inexcusable and after that we were chasing them."

On the Maryland offense:
"Hill had a great game. They played great offensively. They ran harder than we tackled."

On Ralph Friedgen:
"I think he has done a great job. The record speaks for itself, how many teams in the country are 5-0."

On the blocked punt for touchdown:
"Those are the things that I hate. My state of mind is not very happy over those things. I think good teams don't do that, bad teams do."
