Field Hockey Beats American 2-0

September 19, 1998

COLLEGE PARK, Md.-Freshman back Autumn Welsh (Allentown, Pa.) and freshman midfielder Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) each scored a goal, leading No. 12 Maryland (5-1) to a 2-0 shutout of No. 16 American (2-4) in the opening round of the third annual Terrapin Invitational today at the Astro Turf Facility. The Terps take on Massachusetts in the championship game tomorrow at 1 p.m. while the Eagles face Georgetown in the consolation game tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Welsh broke a scoreless game with 9:12 remaining in the first half, and Walter sealed the win for Maryland by scoring off of a penalty corner with 2:29 remaining in the game. Sophomore goalie Angela Platt (Coleraine, Northern Ireland) made two saves in recording her first career solo shutout while senior goalie Stacy Thomas stopped eight shots for the Eagles.

With the win, Maryland head coach Missy Meharg now has 153 career victories in her 11 years as the Terps' head coach. That ties her with Sue Tyler, who compiled a school-record 153 victories during her 14-year career as Maryland's head coach (1974-87). Should the Terps win tomorrow, Meharg would break Tyler's record.
