PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Maryland field hockey team, ranked No. 2 nationally, shut out Villanova 5-0 Sunday afternoon in a match played in the Temple Invitational tournament in Philadelphia. The Terps moved to 2-0 on the year after their opening weekend, while the Wildcats fell to 0-2.

The Terrapin defense shut down the Wildcat offense, not allowing them a shot until the 62nd minute. In the first half alone, the Terps took 20 shots and ten penalty corners. They ended the game with 28 shots and 14 penalty corners. 19 Terrapins saw action in Sunday's game.

"The staff is pleased with the team's effort this weekend," head coach Missy Meharg said. "Having depth in the front and the backfields is fantastic for us. After opening weekend, we are right on track in preparing for the rest of the season."

Maryland scored all five of its goals in the first half. Senior Katie O'Donnell put the Terrapins on the board early with a penalty stroke a minute and 30 seconds into the game. Junior Jemma Buckley doubled the lead nine minutes later. 20 minutes into the game, sophomore Lindsey Puckett scored her first career goal off an assist from sophomore Megan Frazer at the top of the circle. Puckett knocked in the goal from just in front of the cage.

Sophomore Kirstie Dennig pushed the lead to 4-0 off a deflected shot from a penalty corner. Junior Lauren Barr and O'Donnell notched the assists on the play. The Terrapins were awarded a penalty corner right at the end of the half. Sophomore Janessa Pope inserted the ball and sophomore Colleen Gulick stopped it at the top of the circle. Freshman Ali McEvoy scored her first career goal on the play.

Freshman Natalie Hunter made her first career start in the goal on Sunday. She notched a save on the Wildcats' only shot of the day.

In its home opener, Maryland will play No. 16 Old Dominion Friday night at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terps and the Monarchs will take the field at 7 p.m.in College Park. Live stats will be available and fans can listen live at WMUCSports.com.
