MIAMI, Fla. - The University of Maryland (4-5) softball team dropped its second game Saturday at the Golden Panthers adidas Tournament. The Terps lost a 5-0 contest to tournament host Florida International (4-12). The loss drops Maryland to 1-3 in this weekend's play.
Florida International scored its first run in the top of the fifth off an RBI single by shortstop Tabitha Embry. The Golden Panthers added four more runs in following inning. Center fielder Jacque Vetters led off with a double to left center. Second baseman Lindsay Tippings drove Vetters in with two outs. The Terps could have ending the inning but a fielding miscue loaded the bases. The next hitter, right fielder Brittany Witherow, smacked a base-clearing double to left field to increase Florida International's lead to 5-0.
The Terps had four hits in the game, but no runner advanced past second base.
Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) started the game for the Terps and lasted into the middle of the sixth. She struck out six batters and allowed five hits. Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) gave up three hits in relief.
The Terrapins will play in the consolation game against Stony Brook at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
