No. 2 Maryland Clinches ACC Field Hockey Title With 2-1 Win Over North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) scored the game winning with 5:29 remaining in the second overtime period to lift No. 2 Maryland to a 2-1 victory over No. 5 North Carolina at Francis E. Henry Field here Saturday. The victory gave Maryland the regular season ACC championship and the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Maryland's victory was its' 15th in a row which tied the school record for consecutive victories.

Maryland's record is now 17-1 and 4-0 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 12-4 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. Maryland is ranked No. 2 and North Carolina No. 5 in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll.

Walter scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway with 5:29 remaining. She scored on an assist from sophomore Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.). The goal was Walter's team-leading 20th of the season and the assist was Rizzo's fifth of the season.

Maryland's Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) forced overtime as she scored on a rebound with only 1:39 remaining in regulation time. She scored on a rebound of a shot by junior Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.).

North Carolina opened the scoring on a goal by Abby Martin with 11:27 remaining in the first half. Erin Cox and Holly Huff assisted on Martin's goal, which was scored on the Tar Heels' third penalty corner of the first half.

Maryland closes out its regular season as it travels to play Richmond on Nov. 1.
