COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A combined four goals were scored by both teams in the first half to decide the match which saw the third-ranked Maryland field hockey team defeat Ohio State, 3-1, in the Aeropostale ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Sophomore Jackie Ciconte led the Terp attack recording her fourth two-goal game of the season.

Maryland (12-1, 1-1 ACC) closes out a successful nine-game homestand where the Terps went 8-1.

In the eighth minute, OSU defender Leticia Fragapane made an outstanding play making the defensive save on freshman Paula Infante's (Santiago, Chile) breakaway shot, but junior Anja Boettcher (Ingolstadt, Germany) knocked in the rebound to give Maryland a 1-0 lead.

The Terps jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the 23rd minute when sophomore Amber McQuillan (Coopersburg, Pa.) made her way around the baseline and passed to Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) who scored. The Buckeyes (7-4, 1-0 Big Ten) then cut the lead to within one goal on a Deen Rebstock goal at 30:47. UM quickly responded and Ciconte put the Terps up by a pair of goals almost three minutes later.

Although Maryland held a 13-1 shooting advantage and had a 5-2 advantage on penalty corners, the Terps could not capitalize and were held scoreless in the second period for just the second time this season. Meanwhile, Ohio State's only shot attempt in the second half was turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Tori Cano (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) for her only save of the day.

Maryland, again, peppered the opposing goalie, outshooting Virginia on Saturday and the Buckeyes by a combined margin of 48-9. OSU goalkeeper Lindsay Williams stopped 13 of the Terps 24 shots.

In the first meeting between the teams in 19 years, Maryland improves its all-time record against the Buckeyes to 3-0.

Maryland returns to ACC action when it travels to No. 4 Duke on Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
