COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore forward Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) recorded her first hat trick of 2000 and junior goalie Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) picked up her fifth shut out of the year as the No. 1 Maryland field hockey squad (11-1, 2-1 ACC) defeated ACC-rival Duke (5-9, 0-3 ACC) at the Artificial Turf Facility on the Maryland campus. Messimer's career-high tying three goals complemented a solid defensive effort in which the Terps limited the Blue Devils to four shots. Messimer scored three goals apiece in games against Towson (Sept. 15) and Georgetown (Sept. 18) during her freshman campaign in 1999.
The sophomore got the Terps on the scoreboard at 13:29 in the first half, finishing off a cross from senior All-American Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.). The Terps looked to increase their lead on a Tagliente penalty stroke, which Duke sophomore keeper Erica Perrier was able to bat away. Maryland's stingy defense did not allow a first half shot.
In the second stanza, the Terps made it 2-0 when junior All-American Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) rocketed home a penalty corner. Tagliente made the stick stop on the play after a push out by senior All-American Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia). Messimer put the Terps up by three at 8:36, tipping in a pass from senior All-American Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.). The All-Region selection from 1999 scored her third goal of the day, which was an unassisted rebound of a Walter shot, with 2:40 remaining to make the final 4-0.
Maryland's Hohnstine stopped a pair of Blue Devil shots in the shut out. Duke's Perrier made eight saves.
With the victory, Maryland head coach Missy Meharg's career record stands at 199-69-9. The Terps will attempt to give their mentor victory No. 200 at Rutgers on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
