No. 1 Terps Freeze No. 8 Princeton, 2-0

Sept. 29, 2000

PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior All-American and Honda award hopeful Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) netted a second-half game winner and junior goaltender Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) recorded her third shut out of the season as the No. 1 Maryland field hockey squad (8-1) defeated No. 8 Princeton, 2-0, at a chilly 1952 Stadium on the Tigers' campus. The Terps outshot the Tigers by a 23-7 margin in handing Princeton its first loss of the season. The victory marked the Terps' third victory over a Top Ten team this season.

Maryland set the pace in a scoreless first half, outshooting the Tigers 6-2 and forcing sophomore goalie Kelly Baril to make three saves. The Terps' best chance to score came when junior back Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) fired a shot on a penalty corner, but Baril, who owns the second-best goals against average in the nation, made the stop.

Maryland tri-captain Tagliente broke the stalemate less than four minutes into the second half, rebounding a penalty corner attempt by junior All-American Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) and lifting it over an outstretched Baril. The Terps tallied another goal at 23:21, with Tagliente centering the ball to Walter, who then found sophomore Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) on the left side of the cage for the score. Messimer's tally made the final 2-0.

Maryland keeper Hohnstine was stellar in her third shut out of the season, making two saves. Princeton's Baril was also impressive with 14 stops.

Maryland continues its three game road trip in an ACC match-up with No. 10 Virginia on Sunday, Oct. 1. The Terps and Cavaliers face off in Charlottesville at 2 p.m.
