COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team scored twice in the final eight minutes of its home opener against No. 16 Old Dominion Friday night to claim its third win of the year. The Terps (3-0) fell 1-0 to the Monarchs (1-2) early in the game, but battled to tie prior to the break.

"Old Dominion was very, very disciplined and I really give them a lot of credit," head coach Missy Meharg said. "I look forward to playing them again in October. I think Maryland had a much improved second half. We had a little different system change. Old Dominion had a lot of midfielders and we just had to keep those numbers even and I thought we did a good job of that."

In the first half, Old Dominion led the Terrapins in penalty corners with three to the Terps' one and in shots with five to Maryland's four. Old Dominion's Loren Hatch scored with six minutes remaining in the first half to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead off of a penalty corner.

Freshman Ali McEvoy knotted the score on a penalty corner as well with just under three minutes remaining in the half. Senior Katie O'Donnell and sophomore Colleen Gulick notched assists on the play.

The game stayed tied at one for much of the second half, but the Terrapins took a large lead in penalty corners. In the second half alone, the Terps drew 11 penalty corners to the Monarchs' 3. Maryland took 14 shots in the second period, while the Monarchs took five.

Freshman Jill Witmer scored from just next to the right goalpost after a pass from sophomore Megan Frazer with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. O'Donnell doubled the Terps' lead three minutes later after Witmer passed to her just in front of the cage.

Redshirt junior Melissa Vassalotti earned her second career start Friday night. She had a career-high five saves on the Monarch's 10 shots.

The Terrapins have not lost to the Monarchs since 2005, but will play them later this season on Oct. 15 in Norfolk, Va.

Maryland will host its annual Terrapin Invitational tournament next weekend, when it hosts Rutgers, American and New Hampshire Sept. 11-12. The Terps will play New Hampshire Saturday at 11 a.m. and Rutgers Sunday at 2 p.m.

Admission is free for all fans wishing to attend the weekend's games. Fans planning to attend Saturday's games should park in lot 4i, the lot directly next to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Parking will be free in that lot prior to 11:30 a.m. After 11:30 a.m., all fans will be charged $15 to park.
