Charlottesville, Va. - Despite a lackluster first half, the Maryland (1-0) men's soccer team defeated Jacksonville (0-1) by a score of 4-1 today in the opening game of the Virginia/Coca-Cola Classic. Sophomore A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored what would be the game winner late in the first half to raise the Terrapins to a 1-0 start. Jacksonville falls to 0-1 with the three-goal loss.

The Dolphins jumped out early just 8:35 into the contest when a breakdown between the Maryland defense led to a misplay by the Terps and an unassisted goal by Mladen Dikic (Lovran, Croatia). The goal woke the Terps and five minutes later, Maryland converted off a cross from the left side of the field. Hermann trophy finalist Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.) crossed it to sophomore Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) who tapped it to Bryan Vitagliano (Scottsdale, Ariz.) for the first Terrapin score. The goal was Vitagliano's first of his career. Maryland took a 2-1 lead into the half off a header courteously of Herrera, who scored at 29:41. Downing was credited with the assist on that play as well after finding Herrera off the corner kick.

The Terps played a quicker, crisper brand of soccer in the second half and held the Dolphins scoreless through the last 45 minutes. Co-captain Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Pa.) found Rob Birch (West Islip, N.Y.) for a short five-yard shot in front of the goal at 61:18. Sophomore Reed Rickert (Sewickly, Pa.) capped-off the scoring with 1:30 remaining to make the win a 4-1 Maryland decision.

Both teams finish play at the Virginia/Coca-Cola Classic on Sunday, with Maryland meeting South Florida at noon. Jacksonville takes on host No. 10 Virginia at 2:30 p.m. to conclude tournament action.
