COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The fourth-ranked Maryland field hockey squad (15-3, 2-2 ACC) finished the regular season with an all-around solid performance, capturing a 6-1 victory over American (9-8, 4-2 Patriot) on Senior Day in College Park. Upperclassmen Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.), Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md.) and Izzy Palmer (Malvern, England) were honored before the match and performed brilliantly during it to lead the Terps to a 19-2 shot advantage and a final regular-season home victory.

Only moments after being introduced, Palmer and Simon combined with junior Katrin Rummer (Karlsruhe, Germany) to put the Terps on the scoreboard with a direct corner goal. The Terrapins controlled the play in the first half, but American made its lone fast break opportunity count when sophomore Hope Mandel took a long upfield pass and raced it to the goal cage for a score, tying the game at one. But freshman Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) made sure the Eagles' momentum wouldn't last when she finished off a pass from Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) with under four minutes to play before halftime.

The Terrapins stepped it up in the second half, netting four unanswered goals and dispelling any hopes of an upset. Rookie forward Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) collected a loose ball following a Terp corner opportunity in the 42nd minute and buried it for a 3-1 Maryland advantage. She notched her second goal of the day only 1:14 later when Rummer found her on the doorstep with a long crossing pass.

Not to be outdone by the rookie on Senior Day, All-American Messimer rifled in her first goal of the match in the 53rd minute to put the Terps up 5-1. She took the ball into the circle and blasted a grounder past Eagle keeper Laura Miller. Redshirt-freshman Amber McQuillan (Coopersburg, Pa.) crossed the ball to Messimer from deep in the corner for the Terps' final score of the game. Messimer received the pass and launched a rocket into the corner of the cage.

Terp goalies Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) and Tori Cano (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) each played a half on Sunday, with Cano denying American's only second-period shot. The sophomore sprung forward and got her stick on an Eagle deflection shot coming after a free hit into the circle.

The Terrapins next travel to the ACC Championship Tournament, which will be held Nov. 7-10 in Durham, N.C., at Duke University. The No. 3 seed, Maryland will meet up with No. 2 North Carolina on Friday at 4 p.m. in the semifinal round.
