Maryland Softball Hosts Morgan State In Home Opener Wednesday

  • The Maryland Terrapins (11-13) host the Morgan State Lady Bears (4-8) in their home opener on Wednesday at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader at the Terrapin Softball Complex.

  • The Terrapins have won their first home game in College Park for 10 consecutive years. Last season, the Terps overpowered the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 5-1, in the home opener.

  • After dropping three games to Georgia Tech last weekend in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener, the Terps come into the two-game homestand with sophomore Jenny Belak leading at the plate with a .372 batting average. Catcher Nikki Smith holds a .358 batting average while Crystal Crews leads on the mound for the Terrapins at 8-5 and a 2.15 ERA.

  • Maryland leads the overall series with Morgan State, 12-1. The Terps last met the Lady Bears on April 23, 2003, when they won by scores of 8-0 in six innings and 9-1 in five innings.

  • Morgan State stands at 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Lady Bears fell in their home opener to Hampton University, 4-1 and 10-0, on March 16. Sophomore Dominisha Britton had the team-high of three hits in the first game against Hampton.

  • Head Coach Jeff Bozier is in his first season with Morgan State. The Lady Bears finished 7-28 overall (6-14 MEAC) last season.

  • The Lady Bears were selected to finish ninth in the 2006 MEAC preseason poll.
