COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Postgame quotes following Maryland's 16-3 win over Mount St. Mary's in its 2014 season opener.

Maryland Head Coach John Tillman

On Season Opener:
”I didn’t know what to expect. It’s early in the season. Much like the weather, we didn’t know what was going to happen today. We had a young group that we threw out there; they were at least inexperienced in certain areas. [Mount St. Mary’s] had an inexperienced group. In this game, we felt like we had a lot more experience on the back end. We were hoping that the faceoff and defensive experience we had would be a big advantage for us. If we could maximize our possessions to try to out play all of them, we might have an advantage possession-wise. There were some times we did get good opportunities, but just didn’t finish them.”

On what he expected from players:
“We’ll see how we go. I still think there are a lot of things for us to prove. There are so many good challenges ahead of us. We’ll find out. I have a lot of respect for their coach. He does a great job, but they lost so many guys. There were a lot of new players out there and we’re going to face teams that have more experience. That will be a big test for us. UMBC is a really good team that is well coached with a lot of guys back this year. I’m already thinking about them right now. They beat us the last time we played, so we’ve got to have a good week of practice and play better than we did today. We did some things well, but at halftime we had a lengthy discussion on some things we didn’t do well.”

On the play of the freshmen:
“The big thing that we tried to emphasize to those guys all along was that nobody has to win the game; just do the things that we’re coaching you to do. If you play fast, listen to your instincts and trust your teammates, we’ll be fine. I think sometimes when you have some new parts there is a tendency to think ‘I need to make a play.’ Not really. If we just all hit singles and do the little things right, the big things will take care of themselves. We do have a very unselfish group; one that is willing to make the extra pass.”

On Freshman Matt Rambo’s performance:
“Going into it, you’re not sure what’s going to happen. I know with this group, if somebody gets double-teamed they’ll throw it to the next guy. Matt is typically pretty good at finishing and it’s just a matter of who is going to get the opportunity to finish. Matt is pretty good in that mid-range area.”

On moving guys in and out:
“It’s kind of good news, bad news. We’re still trying to figure out who the guys that might be in there in crunch time are. The good news is that we think we have a number of guys that we feel good about, yet the tough part is there such a slim margin amongst the competition for the guys. We haven’t been able to decide who our best three attackmen and top 8-9 midfielders are. Maybe that’s a good thing… We kind of know in the midfield that Michael [Chanenchuk] is a really experience guy. However, even some of the younger guys have had moments where they play well, but still haven’t played quiet as well in other moments. Like any young guys, I think we have enough incase somebody might be struggling to put somebody else in. I do like the fact that we could play more guys and play a little faster. The guys know they can rotate in and really maximize their effort out there.”

On keeping the team grounded:
“The team we play this upcoming Saturday beat us the last time we played. Half the guys on this team experienced that. If that doesn’t motivate you, I don’t know what does. It’s an instate rival. We talked about during halftime that we need to play better. It’s not just about today. We really needed to get better during that last 30 minutes; doing the things we do. I think in some aspects we did and some we didn’t. So we have a lot of work to do. UMBC is really good at what they do. They have been doing this for a really long time, so we better have a good week of practice.”

On the defense’s performance:
“Matt Dunn is really steady and consistent, so I know what we’re going to get from him. Ehrhardt has a very professional approach; that’s the best way to describe it. He’s the kind of guy who is focused and is always trying to do a little extra, either individually, in the film room or as a leader. He tried to make the guys around him better. I was very pleased with those guys and their communication.

“I thought Goran [Murray] played really well off the ball today. I thought his energy was really good. Casey [Ikeda] always does what Casey does. He’s kind of a glue guy for us. It was a tough game for Niko [Amato] because when you don’t consistently see shots, I do think it’s hard for a goalie.”

Freshman midfielder Connor Cannizzaro

On the positive influence of the older players:
“The older guys take us under their wings and really talk us through every situation. They make it so that we feel like they have everything and all we have to do is play and not worry about anything else. We just want to come in and do whatever we can to help the team.”

On transitioning to the college game:
It was good to get our feet under us. It was nice to get in a good game before we take on the rest of the season. It was a good experience.”

On his game play:|
It was a good experience for me. The team really helped me out and helped me get into the right places when I needed to.”

Freshman attackman Matt Rambo

On his first colligate game:
For my first college game I couldn’t have dreamed about it being anywhere else besides Byrd Stadium. I can’t thank the older guys enough for all their help. Throughout the fall and winter they just helped me out and helped me prepare for the game. I’m really thankful for them helping me through this whole process so far.”

On his game play:
“I didn’t know what was going to happen. I was going to try to play hard and fast and see what happened. I was just trying to make the right play.”

Senior midfielder Mike Chanenchuk

On the play of the freshmen:
They played great. I knew they were going to play great. They’ve been playing good all fall and pre-season, so for them to come out here and play as well as they did, was something people were expecting. It’s good for them and I’m excited for them.“
