NEW ORLEANS – Maryland junior Thea LaFond was voted Monday as the Mid-Atlantic Region Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association.

LaFond was one of eight regional winners in balloting by member coaches in the USTFCCCA. The Mid-Atlantic Region includes Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

The Terrapin standout won two events at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships, earning 25 of Maryland’s 50 team points. She won the pentathlon and captured the triple jump by soaring more than a foot past her previous indoor career-best on her final attempt of the competition.

LaFond also finished fourth in the women’s high jump at the ACC Indoor after posting a career-best in the high jump during the pentathlon competition.

Her 4,222 point total in the pentathlon was the third-best this season nationally. She also ranks sixth nationally in the high jump and triple jump.

She will join teammates Amina Smith and Amber Melville this weekend at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Nationals, to be held in Albuquerque, N.M.
