COLLEGE PARK, M.D. The Maryland women’s tennis team began its spring season with a 6-1 victory over George Washington at the Tennis Center at College Park Saturday afternoon.

The Terps easily took the doubles point before winning five of six singles matches. Freshmen Kristina Hovsepyan and Olivia Gaudreault both won in their Maryland debuts.

“I think everyone was nervous because it’s the first match of the year,” head coach Daria Panova said. “I think everyone did a great job fighting through the nerves and winning all the close sets.”

Gaudreault and fellow freshman Alexandra Stanova got the Terps on the board first with a win at No. 3 doubles. Hovsepyan and Welma Luus then clinched the point, ripping off six straight games to take their match, 8-5.

Luus, in action for the first time in over a year because of injury, notched the Terps’ first singles win of the season, taking out Stephanie Wei, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot. Leah Pascarella would then give the Colonials their only win of the day, edging past Stanova in a deciding breaker.

Maryland would clinch the match at No. 5 and No. 6. Gaudreault came back to defeat Taylor Nederlander with a strong second set and breaker. Olga Gaistruk held her nerve in a first set tiebreak and dispatched Egle Jakuciunaite by a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 score.

With the match decided, Nataliya Bredikhina nabbed a win over Grace Egger and Hovsepyan rallied in the second set to defeat Lana Robins, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 1.

The Terps return to action on Sunday against Richmond with play scheduled to begin at 11 a.m
