VCU tallied three goals in the final 13 minutes of play to defeat the No. 13 Maryland men’s soccer team 3-2 Sunday night at Ludwig Field.

The Terps (1-2-1, 1-0 ACC) picked up scoring from senior Jake Pace and freshman Chris Odoi-Atsem. Maryland controlled the match for nearly 78 minutes before surrendering a penalty kick score at 77:08 and then back-to-back breakaways within an eight-minute period to cap the contest.

Pace recorded his team-best third goal of the season with a header from six yards after a beautiful service from fellow senior captain Patrick Mullins from the far sideline at 32:33 as Maryland notched the first goal of the game for this first time this season.

Odoi-Atsem provided Maryland with a two-goal cushion with 19:09 remaining in the contest.  The rookie snagged Mullins’ second assist of the night from 12 yards out and finished to the near post for his first collegiate goal.

VCU – who tied No. 9 New Mexico Friday night - put together a string of scoring to equalize the match with 12 minutes to play.  After Terrapin goalkeeper Steffen got tangled up in the box with a Ram forward, Jose Manel put VCU on the board with a penalty kick tally in the 78th minute.

Kharlton Belmar tied the match with a breakaway score 55 seconds later before Devon Fisher put the Rams on top with the game-winner in the 87th minute.

“It was a very disappointing result,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “When you have a two-goal lead with 12 or 13 minutes left at home, you need to close it out.  We didn’t do a great job of that obviously.

“We didn’t show enough composure in key moments and it wasn’t just the young guys, it was everyone. It was a total team letdown against a good team.”

Maryland’s attendance for the weekend sailed over the 10,000-fan mark for the weekend after recording a Ludwig Field-best crowd of 8,397 Friday night. It was the Terps’ first regular season loss at Ludwig since Sept. 3, 2010.

The Terps head to Chapel Hill for a rematch of the 2012 ACC Championship title game against North Carolina on Friday night.
