As the midway point of summer league nears, several Terps continue to make an impact across the country. But before we check in with the current Terps, former Maryland standout Brett Cecil once again is making news in the pros.

On Saturday, Cecil earned his first-ever selection to the MLB All-Star Game to be held July 16 at Citi Field in New York. The former starter for the Toronto Blue Jays was converted into a reliever late last season and has thrived in the role.

Cecil set a franchise record earlier this year by going through 40 at-bats without surrendering a hit. He also went through a span of 20 innings without allowing a run and has become one of the elite left-handed relievers in the league.

Cecil is 3-0 with a 1.43 ERA in 44 innings and is part of a Blue Jay bullpen that leads the majors in ERA (1.45), opponent’s average (.177) and WHIP (0.92).

In the Cal Ripken League, LaMonte Wade took CRCBL Player of the Week honors for the week of June 24. The rising sophomore recorded two hits in all but one of his five games and finished the week with a .381 average and tallied seven RBI. In game one of a doubleheader against Herndon Braves on June 29, Wade was 2-for-4 with a grand slam to lead the Redbirds to a 7-0 victory. On the season, Wade leads the league in homers (5), is tied for first in RBI (20) and is third in average (.358).

Rising sophomore Anthony Papio earned NECBL Honorable Mention Player of the Week honors for the week ending June 22. Papio hit .381 with six walks, three doubles, seven RBI and four steals in six games for the Sanford Mainers.
