Four members of the Maryland field hockey program were named to their respective national teams and will compete in the Junior World Cup later this summer. Anna Dessoye, Katie Gerzabek and Maxine Fluharty all made the U.S. team, while Sarah Sprink will compete for Team Germany.

The Junior World Cup will be played in Monchengladbach, Germany July 27-August 4. Sixteen teams from around the globe will compete. Held every four years, the Junior World Cup represents the top international event for elite field hockey athletes under the age of 21.

"I am so excited to be playing in the Junior World Cup," Gerzabek said. "We have been working for this tournament since last summer and finally being named to the team that travels to Germany is a dream come true. This tournament is what Under-21 teams around the world are constantly striving for and I know we can't wait to show the world what the U.S. will bring."

The tournament will be held approximately 30 minutes from Sprink's hometown of Neuss, Germany. The freshman has long been a part of the German national team system.

"When I found out that Katie, Maxine, and Anna made the U.S. team, I couldn't have been happier," Sprink said. "They have worked so hard and deserve it. I can't wait to see them shine at the Junior World Cup and represent the Terps!"

Team USA is in Pool A with South Korea, the Netherlands and Ghana. Germany is in Pool D with Belgium, England and Spain. The Americans will take on South Korea at 5:30 a.m. ET on July 27 and Germany will play Belgium at 11 a.m. ET

"I am just so pumped to get over to Germany and play," Dessoye said. "We cannot wait to show what Team USA can do."

Both Gerzabek and Fluharty competed with the Under-21 team as it clinched its bid to the Junior World Cup last fall at the Junior Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

"Earning the bid last fall and now going to compete will be once in a lifetime for us," Fluharty said.
