GREENSBORO, N.C. - Moriah Young and Thea LaFond clinched spots in the 2013 NCAA Women's Track & Field Championships with outstanding performances that helped wrap up the final day of NCAA East Regionals on Saturday.
Young's shot put throw of 52-03.75 is the best of any Terp this season and beats her own record as the second-best distance in Maryland outdoor track & field history. She finished 11th overall.
After qualifying for NCAA Championships in the high jump yesterday, LaFond continued with the momentum she brought into East Regionals and recorded a distance of 42-01.25 in the triple jump to earn a seventh place finish and qualified for NCAAs in this event, too. LaFond is the only Terp to qualify for more than one event.
Freshman Chioma Onyekwere also competed in the shot put on Saturday. The freshman finished 22nd with a distance of 49-09.00.
Young and LaFond are back in action for NCAA Championships June 11-14 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The championship meet will be hosted by Oregon.
