COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team struggled to get runners in Sunday as it dropped the series finale to North Carolina, 8-1.

The Terps (29-24, 11-7 ACC) picked up six hits and drew a walk from the Heels (38-18, 13-8), but could not get runners across the plate throughout the day. Maryland won the first two games of the series, 9-4, and 9-1, in six innings Saturday to clinch the series.

North Carolina took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first off Amber Parrish's two-run shot to left center. Jenna Kelly led off the top of the second with a homer down the left field line to make it 3-0. The Tar Heels loaded the bases with a base hit and two fielder's choices, then Haleigh Dickey hit a two-out double to left to make it 5-0.

In the top of the third, the Heels tacked on a sixth run, which was unearned. Amy Nece drew a two-out walk, then Erin Satterfield reached on an error to score Nece.

The Terrapins scored their run in the bottom of the sixth. Lindsey Schmeiser led off with a double down the right field line, then Lexi Carroll doubled to left center to bring her in.

The Tar Heels added their final runs in the top of the seventh when Parrish singled then Kelly doubled to left to bring her in. Satterfield singled over third base to make it 8-1.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Schmeiser started in the circle for the Terrapins and allowed five hits in her 1.2 innings. Carroll took over in the second and allowed five hits as well and two earned runs.

The Terps have gone 22-10 since March 10 and have won nine of their last 12 games.

Freshman Lindsey Schmeiser has 55 RBI so far this season, which is second in the ACC and in the Maryland record books. The record for most RBI in a season is 56. Sara Acosta has scored 111 runs in her career, which is seventh on Maryland's all-time list. The record is 129, set by Jennifer Potzman in her four-year career (1998-01).
