URBANA, Ill. – Maryland (15-23, 5-4 B1G) fell in its series finale with Illinois (25-13, 6-4 B1G) Sunday, dropping a 20-2 decision to the Illini in five innings.

Maryland’s offense was working early, starting with a two-out rally to load the bases in the first. A walk from Skylynne Ellazar and a single through the left side put runners on first and second, before Taylor Wilson singled in her ensuing at bat. Wilson’s rip would deflect off the umpire standing in the right side of the infield, effectively saving a run from scoring from second before a pop up ended the frame.

Illinois continued its hot weekend of hitting in the bottom of the first, getting a double and single to take a 1-0 lead. The Terps responded in the top of the second, tying the game with a RBI single thanks to Amanda Brashear. JoJo McRae tried to make 2-1 lead for the Terps, but was thrown out sliding at the plate.

Illinois again showed why it’s the top-hitting team in the conference in the bottom of the eighth, using a marathon seven-hit inning to score eight runs. The hosts cruised from there to eventually wrap up the win and series sweep.

Maryland will have a quick turnaround this week, playing a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday vs. St. Frances (PA). The Red Flash edged the Terps 1-0 when they met earlier this season on February 18 at the Tiger Invite. First pitch is slated for 3:00 pm.
