Lee Tallies Two Hits in Game at No. 18 ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Junior shortstop AJ Lee recorded two hits and an RBI in the Maryland baseball team's 18-4 loss to No. 18 East Carolina on Saturday. 

Lee singled and doubled in the game, and was joined by junior left fielder Marty Costes and freshman infielder Tommy Gardiner in recording two hits in the game. Costes had two singles in the outing, and also recorded a put out from left field when he threw an ECU runner out at home plate. Gardiner hit a pair of doubles, including one in the opening inning of the game. 

After a scoreless opening inning between Maryland's Tyler Blohm and ECU's Chris Holba, the Pirates were able to put the first run of the game on the board with an RBI ground out in the second inning. The two Saturday starters each tossed a scoreless third inning, but ECU was able to tack on three more runs in the fourth to make the score 4-0. 

Costes opened the fifth with a single and catcher Ty Friedrich then doubled to put the Terps in scoring positon to begin the inning. An RBI ground out from Zach Jancarski followed, cutting the ECU lead to 4-1. 

The Patriots were then able to pull away from the Terps, scoring six runs in the bottom half of the sixth. 

Gardiner recorded his second double of the day in the seventh, scoring Richie Shiekofer and giving Maryland its third run of the day. The Terps then posted their fourth run on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Biondic

Randy Bednar made the first pitching appearance of his collegiate career, pitching 1.2 innings and striking out one batter. 

Sophomore Barrett Smith recorded the first hit of his collegiate career in the game, doubling off ECU's Zach Barnes in the ninth inning. 

Maryland and ECU will conclude their three-game series at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Hunter Parsons is scheduled to start for the Terps.
