COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Behind five singles victories and winning the doubles point for the seventh time this season, the Maryland women's tennis team (5-5, 0-0 B1G) defeated West Virginia (4-5, 0-0 Big 12), 6-1 on Saturday.
Millie Stretton and Eva Alexandrova each earned their team-best sixth singles victories of the season, while freshman Zoe Kulkarni picked up her fifth singles win of the year. Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka tallied her second-consecutive singles triumph and senior Ekaterina Tour notched her fourth singles win of the year to close out the afternoon.
"I'm happy with the way we closed out today's match," head coach Daria Panova said. "We have some things to fix ahead of tomorrow, but I think we started and finished the match very well. I think we're starting to play better from top to bottom in our lineup and we're looking forward to trying to end the non-conference schedule with a win tomorrow afternoon."
Maryland took control of the match early on after clinching the doubles point for the seventh time this season. Alexandrova and Stretton won their team-best sixth doubles match at the number one position to get Maryland ahead, and Saya Usui and Arnelle Sullivan finished it off with their fourth win of the year at third doubles.
Kulkarni kept the momentum in the Terps' favor when singles play began. The freshman won, 6-1, 6-3, at the sixth singles spot, giving Maryland a 2-0 advantage over the Mountaineers.
Yemelyanenka then put Maryland ahead, 3-0, with a strong, 6-3, 6-4, victory at fourth singles. It was her third singles win of the season.
West Virginia picked up a point with a win at fifth singles, but Alexandrova then clinched the match for Maryland with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 triumph at first singles.
Maryland then earned a pair of three-set tiebreak wins from Stretton and Tour to close out the afternoon and give the Terps a 6-1 win.
The Terps will close out their non-conference schedule on Sunday with a match against Marshall. Opening serve from the JTCC in College Park is slated for noon.
