WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Maryland women’s tennis team (1-3, 0-0 B1G) fell to William & Mary 4-3 on Saturday.

Millie Stretton and Eva Alexandrova both picked up a doubles and singles win in the match. The match was also Anastasiia Gevel’s first collegiate match.

“It’s tough to lose such a close match,” head coach Daria Panova said. “I thought we started the match well with the doubles point, but William & Mary took the momentum back when singles began. We have some things to work on this week before getting to play on our home courts next weekend.”

The Terps got off to a good start when they picked up the doubles point to begin the match.

Ekaterina Tour and Katsiaryna Yemelyenanka made quick work at second doubles, earning a 6-1 victory. Stretton and Alexandrova followed suit shortly after, closing out a 6-3 win at first singles to give Maryland the early 1-0 advantage.

The Tribe took their first lead of the match when singles play began, claiming victories at fifth and sixth singles. They then extended their lead with a three-set win at fourth singles and were one point away from the match victory.

Stretton stepped up for the Terps to bring Maryland within a point following a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at third singles, but William & Mary was able to close it out with a three-set victory at first singles.

Alexandrova was able to finish her match at second singles with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win shortly after the Tribe clinched the victory.

Maryland will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 17 when the Terrapins host Long Beach State at the JTCC in College Park.
